The big 3-0

Back in February, we celebrated my 30th birthday. Birthdays just really aren't the same anymore as a grown up! The weekend before my birthday, Abe and I went out on a date to celebrate. Before we left, Norah was in the bathroom being extremely quiet while I was showering. When I got out, I found this...

I never anticipated him trying to surprise me with anything, but I started getting suspicious when he was worried about us being late for our reservation. The second clue is that when we drove into the underground parking, he last minute had to switch the direction in where he was going to park. Low and behold, I had some friends waiting on us when we got to the restaurant. It was so fun to be out with my friends and nice of Abe to surprise me.





On my actual birthday, we didn't do anything too exciting. Abe did make me a yummy breakfast



and my friend Kelsey did make me the most amazing, massive chocolate cake. So far, the 30's aren't too bad ;) I still feel like I should be 22 years old... other than the little army we have created!

Take Aways

I had a lot of time to think and do nothing while at the hospital. Once I hobbled home last Tuesday, I was sharing all my "take aways" that I had from being in the hospital. It most definitely was one of my darkest weeks, however I did learn a lot.

I learned that...

I will NEVER take my back for granted. I couldn't even move my toes without straining my back at first. I soon came to realize that I just had to lay there in pain and try NOT to move at all, or else it would be extremely painful.

I was completely humbled by the entire experience. I had to rely on the nurses for everything. It was really hard for me. I wanted so badly to do things on my own. For the first 3 days, I was completely having to go to the bathroom on a bedpan. This was not an easy task. I had to hold onto the left side of my bed and try to turn myself on my side. The nurse had to carefully help me roll on my back and the bedpan. I couldn't even wipe myself during these 3 days! In the mornings the nurses would come in and strip my clothes off and give me a sponge bath. Horrible. I needed help changing my clothes, etc.

I miss my kids and husband terribly. Oh how I missed them. I wanted to be at home playing with them, feeding them and putting them to bed. It broke my heart a little to be so near, yet so far away. I am so thankful for Abe. He is such a good little Mr. Mom. He was shuttling the kids around, picking up the house, doing laundry, dishes, grocery shopping, etc. I wished that I could have him to myself at the hospital, but of course it was best for him to be at home with the kids.

I need to always follow through with what I promise. One experience made me think about this a lot. I can't remember which day it was, but I think it was Sunday. I had told my nurse first thing in the morning that I really wanted to take a shower. She promised me that she would come and help me take a shower, but I needed to wait until after breakfast. After breakfast, I asked her again and she told me to wait a couple more hours because she didn't have time. After a couple more hours, she said she still didn't have time. I was very emotional and super frustrated. I just wanted to wash my nasty hair and feel clean. I finally got her to help me on my little wheely chair and in the shower and told her I didn't need her help and pretty much did it on my own while sitting down. It made me think of my cute little girls and how they must feel when I keep telling them to "hold on" or "in a minute" and then don't follow through the first time.

Hospital food in Germany SUCKS. Luckily I had a friend that brought me 2 yummy meals a day for 3 days, another meal from a friend and some treats snuck in. I probably would have starved if not!

I have great friends. I was amazed at how much support we had. I had a plethora of visitors while in the hospital. When I got out of the hospital, I had a handful of meals brought over. The first day Abe had to go back to work and I still couldn't do very much, I had friends help out with my kids. My friend Kelsey even came and vacuumed and moped my floors!

I love my savior and am so thankful for the atonement. I never have felt so much pain in my life (of course childbirth would be #2) and it was really lonely and depressing. However, thinking about my savior and knowing that he understood all my pain was really comforting. Of course this was right before Easter, so it was in my thoughts even more.

Cripple

That describes one of the many things I feel right now. I have been training for a half marathon the past couple of months and I have started having back problems. The last time I trained for a half, I also had back problems, but they ended up going away. I do remember that my back got quite painful, so I tried to be preventative and have been going to PT and stretching my legs and back better. I also went to the doctor and got checked and made sure it was ok to continue running. Almost two weeks ago on a Thursday, I ran 10 miles and it got me pumped up about the race. Mentally, I needed that run to show myself that I can indeed run the half. I felt great afterwards but the next day I sat in the car for about 8 hours on our drive to Switzerland since Abe's parents were visiting. The rest of our trip, my back was shot. I had back spasms when I woke up, needed help out of bed and it hurt all the time. I couldn't even sleep and found myself in pain all night. I couldn't physically turn side to side. The pain was too much and I had to manually move my hips with my hands. Luckily I survived the 8 hour car ride back home and the next day was the same. I could still walk at this point though. By Wednesday, the pain was even worse and I could barely hobble around. I decided to see the doctor on base to get an X-ray and examination. X-ray was normal (only shows bones) and the doctor gave me Percocet, Valium and some other pain meds. These drugs didn't really do anything for me. However I did sleep through the night for the first time in a week due to the meds. Thursday morning I couldn't move. I ended up calling the doctor to make sure he thought I was ok. It was almost noon and I still hadnt been able to get up and go to the bathroom. He advised to take another Percocet and have Abe try and help me get to the bathroom. Abe helped me and we got a handful of feet while I was in total agony. All of a sudden, my back gave out and it felt like sharp knives cutting through it. I had no other choice but to fall to the ground. The pain I felt while lying on the ground was the worst pain imaginable. I would have rather given birth to 5 babies at the same time naturally than that pain. my body was also shaking uncontrollably. Abe called the ambulance and it felt like an eternity before they arrived. Abe says that when they walked in, they said, "on a scale of..." and I yelled out "TEN!", before they even had a chance to finish. I remember them putting my IV in and telling me the drugs would make me really sleepy. I didn't care. ANYTHING to take me out of that pain. The pain meds they gave through my IV knocked me out. I have no recollection of them getting me on a stretcher, down the stairs, the ambulance ride, etc.


the next thing I remember was trying to make sense of different faces I was seeing and finally saw Abe's face. I didn't know where I was, but was at the hospital. The drugs started wearing off and I remember feeling desperate for pain relief again. It was probably around 3 and I still hadn't gone to the bathroom. They wouldn't give me a catheter and insisted I use a bed pan. Two nurses came to my sides and practically pulled my butt up and it landed on the bedpan. Pretty sure I screamed. Worst pain imaginable! Thanks Germans for being so gentle! I couldn't even move my toes without my back completely hurting. They didn't give me an MRI that day because they wanted to make sure I was still in pain the next day. Give me a break! The next morning they gave me an MRI and it showed I have a herniated disc. The doctor also said I have scoliosis to the left side. He thought I should make sure my legs are the same length, because they could contribute to my scoliosis and back problems most likely due to running.

Anyway, the next couple of days I couldn't move much. The bed pain was horrible and I had to rely on the nurses to pull my pants down, turn me onto the bed pan, wipe my butt, etc. it was complete misery. Luckily Abe's parents were still in town, so Abe was able to come help me a little bit. One night while he was helping me onto the bed pan, he started cracking jokes and making me laugh. I was laughing so hard I was also crying in pain at the same time. I told him he was fired from helping me if he did that again ;). After a couple of days I was able to sit up. That was wonderful because I could finally go to the bathroom on a portable chair/potty and then graduate into transferring from the wheel chair to the toilet. All my nurses have spoken fairly good English except for one, and we got along just fine. One of my nurses drives me a little crazy though. She is very pushy and well, German. She forces me to do things and isn't the warmest person. The other day, since I could sit in the chair, I insisted on taking a shower. They had stripped me down in the mornings and gave me a sponge bath (that was fun), but my hair was super super greasy and I felt gross. I LOOKED gross. She promised me about 3 times that day that she would help me shower. Every time I reminded her she "didn't have time". I ended up demanding that she wheel me into the shower and I could wash myself and just let her know when I was done. I'm glad I grew a backbone, because I felt so good afterwards. The other nurses even commented, "your hair looks nice!". Today I finally walked a bit for the first time and worked with the physical therapist.

The entire time I've been here, my dad kept telling me that oral steroids do wonders for a herniated disc. I asked the doctor about it and he was very firm that they don't do them. They were going to do a steroid injection into my back today guided by a CT scan. After talking to a handful of people, including my friends husband who is a neurosurgeon, I decided it would be best to decline the injection. There are too many risks and I am getting better everyday and at this point, don't need surgery. The doctor that I have been dealing with and am not fond of, came to discuss it with me today. The head neurosurgeon came with him. The cultural differences are a lot different here in the hospital. Like my liaison person from base said, "the doctors are like god here. They tell you what is going to happen and there are no questions asked". That has been really frustrating for me here. That combined with a language barrier, creates an emotional situation. I luckily had the liaison guy come today to help me out with my meeting with these two docs. They explained the procedure and then I told them I wasn't comfortable with it. I mentioned I may want to get home and get oral steroids from base. Surprisingly, the head doc seemed ok with it, while the other one opposed. I thought it was neat because the head neurosurgeon came and visited me again tonight. He was super friendly and wanted to see pictures of my kids, asked if I was Mormon since I am from Utah and had a genuine conversation with me. He also told me that since my progress is so good, he actually thinks I made the right decision to not get the injection. So, the plan is to go home tomorrow after physical therapy. Abe can get me oral steroids on base that I can start asking and I just have to take it easy. It will take a bit for me to recover. Crazy that I will have been in the hospital for about 5 days.

I have been an emotional wreck all week. I felt bad about ruining Dale and Margie's trip (they left yesterday), was in so much pain, hated that I couldn't do anything for myself and have been frustrated. I missed my kids, my husband and am heartbroken about dropping out of the Prague half marathon in 1.5 weeks. I have realized how much I won't take my back for granted. Though far away from family and in another Country, I have been overwhelmed with the support we have had. Friends are helping watch our kids, our church has set up meals, I've had more visitors at the hospital than I can count at the moment. It is a blessing, because these have been some of my darkest hours. One friend brought me breakfast and dinner for several days so I didn't have to eat the disgusting Food they serve you here. She rubbed my feet, braided my greasy hair and I was given candy, books, etc by friends to keep me entertained. My heart is extremely full and I am so very grateful for everything.

Chamonix

In February we went on a big ski trip to Chamonix, France with two other families; the Pehrson's and the Donehue's. We all caravanned there and our 8 hour car ride turned into a 13 hour car ride with lots of traffic.

We rented a Chalet in the mountains and it did not disappoint. It fit all 15 of us and was old and rustic. We had to drive up several switchbacks to get there and it sat on the top of the mountain with gorgeous views.




We were able to spend one day walking around the town. I wish I could have had one more day to go in the shops, etc. but the week went way too fast.





Norah made a little friend in one of the stores and I even found her making out with him.


The entire week was spent skiing and playing outside. Adeline was in heaven. She loves playing outside in the snow and there was always another kid that wanted to join.









The kids had a blast inside too and were always playing whether it was "family", hide and seek, watching movies, etc. They all played so well.

Abe enjoyed his time snowboarding and went just about everyday. One morning Liz and I went out on the slopes for a little bit and then passed the passes off to the boys.

I took the kids outside of the chalet and worked with them to ski down the steep driveway. It was quite the workout for me. They had a blast and were able to get the hang of it (somewhat).



The girls did have their turn to go on the ski hill.






Once again, it was a big workout for me since I was trying to teach all 4 girls. Luckily, Adeline got the hang of it after her first run and didn't need any help after that. She would even ride up on the pull lift by herself, ski down the hill and do it over and over again. Made me proud! Norah was very hesitant at first and didn't try very hard. She took a big break and then went down a handful of times later. If I had one more day with her, she would have been completely fine without help.



Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of Adeline skiing on that day, but took lots of videos. Since she did so well, I took her up the mountain another day.

She first started on that bunny hill and it was way too easy for her.



We hopped on the gondola to venture up the mountain. Adeline was so incredibly brave. She never once complained, whined or said anything negative. She was totally game to try anything.















Of course we had to get some hot chocolate to end out little ski day!


On Valentines Day, us and the Donehue's put our kids to bed and then all three of us couples got to go out to dinner while the Pehrson kids stayed home. We found such a fun, authentic little restaurant and the food was amazing! Not sure I was very fond of the escargot. The frog legs weren't too bad though!

All in all, it was such a fun trip. Good company and lots of fun!

Prince Charming

Before I forget, I wanted to document Adeline and Norah's cute conversation a couple of weeks ago.

N: Are you going to get married Adeline?
A: Yes, and so are you!
N: Are you going to marry a BOY Adeline?
A: Yes, and you will marry a boy too.
N: I don't want to marry a boy! I don't like boys!
A: Don't worry Norah. He will be just like Daddy!
N: OK

So sweet. I feel like there has been several occasions where Adeline says something that I don't want to forget, and then I forget it because I don't document it. She is pretty funny. A couple other things that Adeline has said...

While sitting at the table eating, out of nowhere Adeline said, "Mrs. Berlin likes me the best!" (Adeline's teacher). I begin to tell her that I'm sure Mrs. Berlin loves Adeline, but she loves all the other kids too. Adeline said, "I know, but she still likes me the best!"

I can't remember where we were going to take Adeline, but I was hoping to take her. Adeline said to me, "Daddy is going to take me." I told her that I really wanted to take her. "No mom, you are better at watching Norah and Meika than daddy is". Oh, thanks Adeline. Nice save and it makes me feel so much better!
